Yesterday marked a heartwarming collaboration between Carolina Comfort Air and 3Wheel Therapy, a local organization dedicated to providing therapeutic riding experiences to individuals with disabilities. Our team had the privilege of meeting with Nicole Kohler, the founder of 3Wheel Therapy, at Island Greenway in Carolina Beach, where we donated helmets to support their cause.
Nicole’s journey with 3Wheel Therapy is deeply rooted in personal experience and a passion for helping others. Inspired by her mother’s Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Nicole has long been driven to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to community resources and recreation. As a Recreation Therapist, she witnessed firsthand the transformative power of providing such opportunities to people of all ages.
Her journey with 3Wheel Therapy began when she learned about a program in Illinois that provided bike rides with the use of adaptive tricycles to individuals who may not be able to ride independently. Upon moving to North Carolina, Nicole searched for a similar program to volunteer with but found none. Determined to fill this gap, she embarked on a journey of research and collaboration, meeting with organizations across the country to learn about their operations and trikes.
In May 2022, 3Wheel Therapy officially began, with rides commencing in June 2023. Today, they boast two adaptive tricycles and offer free rides with the assistance of volunteers who pedal the trikes. Riding along the Island Greenway in Carolina Beach, as well as at local Wilmington parks and partner sites such as nursing homes and day programs, 3Wheel Therapy provides inclusive experiences for individuals of all ages, from 5 to 91.
The experience offered by 3Wheel Therapy is ideal for people with disabilities, aging adults, individuals with low balance or coordination, low stamina, or those who simply fear riding a bicycle. It’s a testament to Nicole’s dedication and vision that 3Wheel Therapy has become a beacon of inclusivity and joy in the community.
