Circuit Breaker Tripped
If your circuit breaker trips, due to a surge or other device drawing too much power, it can cut power to your thermostat causing the black screen. Simply flip your circuit breaker back on to see if this resolves your issue.
Batteries Are Dead
Not all thermostats run on your home’s power supply. If your thermostat screen goes blank and is powered by batteries, you should first try to replace these.
Safety Switch Triggered
Some heating and cooling systems can trigger a safety switch, turning off the thermostat if any damage has been detected. In summer months a safety switch can be triggered when too much water builds up in your condensate pan. The switch may be flipped in a furnace if the unit becomes too hot and is subject to damage. If your home heating or cooling system’s safety switch was triggered, you should have it inspected promptly.
Thermostat Needs to Be Replaced
Though thermostats can last upwards of 15 years, they do wear out and it could be time to replace it. A new and properly programmed thermostat can save up to 20% on energy costs!
